My research focused mostly on the occurrence of Type II Diabetes in Inuit and First Nations populations. I began with a history of Diabetes and how it was treated then moved on to how obesity is linked to diabetes, followed by studies conducted in various populations. While I tried to address the issues of why the disease is so prominent in Indigenous populations, I could not answer all of the questions that I started out with. As many studies showed, the drastic change in diet that occurred following the introduction of non-traditional foods has played a large part in the declining health of First Nations people. I really wanted to look at why the prevalence of diabetes among First Nations peoples is so high when compared to non-First Nations.
